Autistic Traits

Almost 2 years ago I was officially diagnosed as Autistic.

I realise many of you may not be interested in this, but if you’ve ever wondered why someone you know:

  • Doesn’t do small talk
  • Is difficult to converse with or barely speak in a group/ with strangers
  • Doesn’t phone you for a chat
  • Prefers to text
  • Seems a bit strange/ weird
  • Obsess over unusual interests
  • A very picky eater
  • Can’t throw or catch
  • Seem blunt/ rude
  • Seem shy/ snobby
  • Never go to the hairdressers/ have the same hairstyle for years
  • Have too many pets
  • Don’t look you in the eye
  • Stare into space
  • Have no fashion sense/ dress for comfort
  • Love learning/ tests
  • Ask you to repeat yourself and then reply before you do
  • Look miserable
  • Hate going shopping
  • Barely go out without a safe person
  • Have few friends
  • Prefer to stay at home
  • Hate surprises/ change
  • Go to the same place for every holiday
  • Don’t laugh at your ‘jokes’
  • Take things literally
  • Prefer animals to people
  • Read a lot
  • Need to know everything possible
  • Love technology….
  • Gives such good presents.

The list goes on.

Having the odd trait doesn’t make you autistic, but having loads that affect every day life and make you feel alien, well that makes me autistic.

Getting this answer at 54 years old was both a revelation and an explanation for my whole life.

It doesn’t make me stupid and it doesn’t make me ‘wrong’ it makes me different.

I always knew and embraced being different, I felt like I was two different people (one at home and another out) and I love being right. Apparently I learned to ‘mask’ young and now I’m not sure how to be the ‘real’ me, but I’m trying.

More things to learn!

Live and learn…

I used to say if I was really polite to someone I didn’t like them.

If I was blunt and sarcastic then I liked them 😅 who knew!
