9 Social Rules That can be Confusing to Autistic People

👋 Hi, I’m Autistic Nana!
Here are 9 social rules that neurotypical people follow — but many autistic people just don’t!

🗣️ 1. Small talk — It’s meant to build comfort, not share info. We often wonder… what’s the point?

💬 2. Hidden meanings — “It’s cold in here” actually means “close the window.” Just say it!

👁️ 3. Eye contact — Some find it connecting. Others find it overwhelming.

😊 4. Politeness masks — We value honesty over polite pretending.

🔄 5. Turn-taking — We might miss cues or need clearer signals.

🧍‍♀️ 6. Hierarchies — We treat everyone equally. Rank doesn’t matter.

💬 7. Politeness vs truth — We say what we mean. That is kindness.

🕰️ 8. Vague plans — “Let’s meet sometime” sounds like an actual plan. Please be clear!

❤️ 9. Emotional timing — We feel deeply, just show it differently.

Different doesn’t mean wrong — it just means different.
